Switches & Bridges

Ethernet switches and bridges or switching hubs/bridging hubs are devices used to connect to your local area network (LAN). This allows for those said devices to communicate over your network. With a network switch and/or bridge, you can connect multiple devices: computers, laptops, printers and servers, all to the one network switch. You can also route data between these devices. Essentially, network switches are a multiport network bridge that utilise hardware addresses to process and forward information. Dissimilar from an ethernet hub, a network switch only sends data to the devices designated to receive it, whereas an ethernet hub can transmit the same data through every output.

When choosing the right ethernet switch and/or bridge for you/your office, ensure that you factor in the amount of traffic it will be receiving, the number of nodes, size of packets and network diameter. These all determine the size and quality of switching hub you will require.
